CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

I barely catch Adam before he reaches the front door. My fingers slap and miss his shirt at first, and then I grab material and pull. Adam turns toward me; worry in his eyes. “I have to go.”

“Go where? You don’t know where Justin is, right? He could be anywhere.”

He tilts his head at me like I know better than that. “Hillard House? You think he’s at Hillard House?”

“Where else would he be?”

Anywhere, I want to say. He could literally be anywhere, just because he had been at Hillard House that night, just because… whatever… doesn’t mean he’s gone back there now.

“I’m not supposed to leave.” I promised Gray I would stay here, and that’s what I’m going to do.

“I never asked you to come with me,” Adam reminds me a bit too harshly, causing me to step back. It’s stupid to get my feelings hurt so easily. There’s so much other bad going on, people are dead, people are dying, people are missing… and here I am a little hurt over Adam being snippy when I’m the one who grabbed him and made him stay, who assumed that we were together, and I’d go to Hillard House if he went to Hillard House.

He must see the surprise in my eyes because he shakes his head. “Sorry, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it that way.”

“No, I get it. Go try to find Justin. I don’t think he’ll be at Hillard House, though.”

“How would you know?” Snark again. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. He opens them again and looks at me softly. “I mean, why not?”

“Because why would he go back there?”

“Maybe he’s looking for answers. Like we were.”

“Maybe. I don’t like the idea of you…” I want to say I don’t like the idea of him going alone. Maybe I don’t like the idea of being alone. In any case, I don’t like the idea of him going to Hillard House looking for Justin.

“I’ll be fine.” He gently takes my hand and pulls his away from his shirt. I hadn’t realized I’d been gripping him so hard. I’m sure this isn’t what he expected when he’d come over earlier… first, me naked. Then, me bloody. Now, me clingy. He’ll never come back at this rate. That’s probably a good idea for both of us.

My phone rings upstairs as Adam reaches for the door. I’m sure it’s Gray calling me, more than likely letting me know about Justin missing and to be careful.

I promised him I’d say.

I promised.

“I’ll let you know what I find out, alright?” He hands me his phone. “Put in your number so I can contact you.”

So, I do as quickly as I can while mine calls out from the second floor.

Reluctantly, I give his back. With a nod, he’s out the door.

I run up the stairs and catch my phone right before it goes to voice mail. That’s all I need, for Gray to think I’m ignoring him.

To my surprise, it’s not Gray’s number.
